His parents, Ethan and Clarissa Pe mber, were among the first settlers in the county, removing from Clinton County . New York, in 1834. They had seven children, of whom Hiram and Lovina are livi ng, and C——, Betsey. Jane, Franklin and Herman are dead. Mr. Pember has been twice married. His first wife was Matilda Heath, born in Livingston Count y, New York, in 1812. Her father was Stephen Heath. He had a large family—Cheste r, Lovina, Louisa, Matilda, Stephen, Harrison, Truman, Rehecca, Horace. Clar issa, Fannie and Mary. For his second wife Mr. Pember married Harriet Arnold, w ho was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1822. She was a daughter of Ephraim and Elea nor Arnold. who died in Maryland. They had eight children — Elizabeth, Cathar ine, Mary, John, Sarah, Susan, Ellen and Harriet. Hiram Pember was born in Cli nton County, New York, in 1811. He is the oldest living settler in the townshi p. He had the honor of suggesting the name Freedom for the township, and Pember ville was named after the Pember family. Mr. Pember claims to have raised the largest crop of wheat, caught more fish and shot more deer than any othe r man in the township.
