Concerning Pamella, her granddaughter Mrs. Matteson says: "I
remember my grandmother very well. She was rather short and thick-set
      Page 103
and I am told was quite proud, and even in those pioneer days always
managed to have something nice to wear. She felt very proud of her black
      silk dress and silk bonnet.
She told me how they lived in their loghouse in the early days, and
its loft was store-house, sleeping-room and clothes closet, all in one. I t
was here they kept their barrel of pork, as well as other supplies.
One Sunday morning they were all ready for meeting, and she went int o
the loft for her black silk bonnet and it wasn't to be found anywhere. Th ey
hunted all over, but it couldn't be found, not until many days afterward,
when it was found in the pork barrel as they were taking out the meat for
dinner. Oh the tragedy of it! How terrible to find one's Sunday bonnet
in such a condition! It made a big impression on my childish mind, and I
decided that above the pork barrel wasn't a safe place to hang your best
      bonnet."
