      Grandchildren think his birthplace was on the Canadian side of t he
      boundary near Hummingford. About 1826 his father removed west and bo ught
      land in Concord, which included considerable territory in what is no w
      Erie Co., N. Y. By 1832 James emigrated to Lorain, Ohio, with severa l
      other New York families. In 1834 he traversed the wilderness, and he lped
      to start a settlement in the township of Freedom, Wood Co. There h e bought
      the land owned by his brother-in-law, Benjamin Waite, deceased37 A . for
      $600. He is said to have built the first framed house in the town, a nd the
      third saw-mill; in 1841 he started a grist-mill. In May 1854 he ha d 26 lots
      surveyed and platted. The village of Pemberville was named in his ho nor.
      His name frequently appears in town history; he was township truste e in
      1850-1; J. P. 1865
