He was named for the hero of the hour. Ethan’s father and both
uncles had served with Ethan Allen, besides being distantly related and
related by marriage in several lines. The trail past the Poultney home wa s
kept hot by the “Green Mountain Boys", and local talk was filled with tal es
of Ethan Allen and his prowess.
School and church privileges were then available. About 1798 the
family went north and settled. probably Ethan with them.
The following records are given us by Mr. McLellan of the Moorsfield
Press, who has papers owned by his ancestors, ?rst settlers of Clinton Co :
In the account books of Dr. Benj. Moore, ?rst physician in Champlain, wit h
visits, medicines, and notes, the earliest entry of Ethan is Aug. 2, 1802 ; we
may infer that he was the head of a house, and possibly of legal age. Fro m
the Journal of Judge Pliny Moore, Sept. 8, 1807, Ethan signed the sub-
scription list of Committee of Safety for arms. Oct. 19, 1807, Ethan was
taxed $1. on above. On the tax list of 1823, Champlain. Ethan owned a
farm of 110 A. on Lot No. 116, Refugee Grant, near the present village of
      Mooers Forks.
Soon afterward he removed West. The Holland Land Co. records have
this item: Ethan Pember bought May 8, 1827, Tp 7, Range 6, N. part of
Lot 56, 50 A-, for $225. This was in Concord, then a part of Niagara Co.
There are no county records of Ethan
      Page 131
Nor have we any record of his life in Lorain Co., Ohio. By 1834 he
had settled in Wood Co., and bought land in section 3; in 1835 H. Eyster
sold a piece to Ethan. However he is not on the voting list of 1836 in
      Freedom. No later records exist.
