James H. Linder came to Grant Co., Indiana at age 5 with his father Jacob Linder and mother Elsie Honnold from Muskingum Co., Ohio where he was born. He lived on a 240 acre farm (in Jefferson Twp.) and was affiliated with the Methodist Church. In August 1860 (5 October 1859) in Grant Co., Indiana, he married Martha E Watson, the daughter of John Watson, born 13 April 1841 in Jefferson Twp., Grant Co., Indiana. James and Martha had 5 children: 1. Philena Linder; 2. Lemon M. Linder; 3. Ella Linder; 4. Nora Linder; 5.Lettie (Letta) Linder.
