Mr. Pombrio says: “You’ll notice that we spell our name Pombrio.
The name has changed several times because the older people could neither
      Page 134
read nor write. (They had no school privilege in Canada.) When we went
to school, the teacher would ask us our name, and we had to let her spel l it
the best she could from the pronunciation. So it has been written: Pont-
briand, DesPonbriand, Pombrah, Pombria, Bombrah, etc.”
In a Clinton Co. record or two we find also Pemhria, Pembrio.
In the vicinity of Sorel are found the names Pontbriand and Pombriaux.
