  "John Pember, The History of the Pember Family in America" Compiled by Mrs. Celeste Pember Hazen. Page 23, 40. "Early R. are lost." Elijah Pember owned quite a bit of land and in 1776 bought land in Randol ph, VT to settle his sons, Samuel and Thomas. In Oct 1780 he made a tri p up the CT river to inspect the property. When he was within a days jour ney from Randolph, news came that his son had been slain. It was Thomas , the younger son, who had been killed by an Indian raiding party. Thoma s was the first victim and his name is on the monument in South Royalto n which commemorates the attack, which came as a group was on the way t o the meetings on Sunday. Thomas was buried where he fell but his remain s were moved to the new cemetery at Randolph Center where a stone is insc ribed: "Memnto Mori. In memory of Thomas Pember, Son of Elijah and Hanna h Pember, who was killed by the Indians in Royalton, 16 Oct 1780. Age 2 3 years." His brother Samuel's name is also on the monument at South Roya lton, along with the names of several who were taken captive, as was Samu el. The Indian allies who made the raids were paid a half-Joe (the Portug uese gold coin then worth about $8.81 and had a figure of King Johannes o n one side and was call a half-Joe in the American Colonies). This was t h e pay for delivering each prisoner alive and well and they were "calle d to account for scalps." The settlers had no way of knowing the Britis h rules, so flight seemed to be the best way or chance. Thomas took a cha nce, it is thought, and was speared in the back and scalped. The monumen t in South Royalton is in the form of a granite arch and is across the st reet from the Congregational Church (Paul Sr. and Ada Callender have see n the arch monument). Elijah's brother John was the great, great grandfather of James Pember wh o laid out, in 26 lots, the village which later was named in his hono r - PEMBERVILLE, OH - near Bowling Green, OH. Jacob Pember, Grandson of T homas Pember, married Lydia Fillmore, aunt of President Millard Fillmore , on 29 Jan 1767.
