    • REVOLUTIONARY WAR RECORDS, DUPLIN
      AND SAMPSON COUNTIES, NORTH CAROLINA.

      GAINEY, Bartholomew, private, Duplin County Militia soldier
      served under Lieutenants Joab Blackman and Francis Hill who
      were under Capt. Richard Clinton. (All from Sampson Co. area).

      Bartholomew the son of William Gainey who died in Chowan
      County, N.C. was born 2 May 1718 in Virginia and married
      Reddick there. He moved his family to the Duplin/Sampson area
      of North Carolina before 1750. In the 1820 Sampson county census
      for Captain Westbrook's District a note is written in the margin, vis
      "Mr. B. Gainey lives with Reddick Lee, is 102 years of age and drinks
      1/2 gallon of brandy each day" .
      Bartholomew and Miss Reddick's children were:
      1- William born 12 Nov 1757 who fought in the Revolutionary War.
      2- Dicey born 1759 who married Westbrook Lee.
      3- Edmund born about 1765 who married Martha. He died in 1791 and
      she is named in Bartholomew's will.
      4- Elias.
      5- "Edney" born 10 Feb 1792 who married Moses Westbrook and moved
      about 1830 to Georgia. (date of birth must be a mistake as date is listed as
      marriage date to Moses Westbrook, who was born in 1769)
      6- Noel who married Silvannah Royal.
      7- Abraham who married Kilty wood.
      8- Reddick born about 1761, married Ann, he died in 1808 and his heirs
      received items in Bartholomew's will. He is said to have fought in the
      Revolution.
      9- Sarah, deceased who had married Willis West.
      10- Kiziah born about 1769, deceased, married Nathaniel Caruthers. And
      11- Mary, deceased, who had married Thornton.
      The old soldier's will was probated at the Nov 1821 term of Sampson Court.
