Captain George Dennison, fought under Oliver Cromwell at the Batt l e of Marston Moor (York) and Naseby in 1645. He married Lady Jane Borod el l and emigrated to America. Captain Dennison is credited with virtuall y e nding King Philip's War i6 when he captured and executed Canonche t , Chief of the Narragansett Indians at Stonington, Connecticut.
From "Denison Genealogy", pg. 1: " George's bro, Den Danl Denison w r ote in 1672 "My two brothers, Edward and George had all the Estate o f m y father left between them, being both marryed long before my father' s de ath; my Brother Georged his first Wife in the year 1643, went in t o England was a souldier ther above a year, was at the Battle of York , o r Marston Moor, where he did good service, was afterward taken Prison er , but got free and having married a second Wife he returned to New Eng lan d the year before our Mother died, and not long afterward removed him sel f to New Ldon near whereunto (viz) at Stonington he how liveth, havi n g 3 sons John, William, and George, 4 or 5 daughters . . . 3 of Daughte r s are marryed to Stanton, Palmer and Cheesebrook (sic) all living at pr es ent in the same town."

DENISON BORODELL
Pa g e 177
This Capt. George Denison having buried his wife in 1643, we n t back to Eng. the same year,
where as we learn from a letter of his brother Maj.-Gen. Dani e l Denison, pub. in the April No. of
the New Eng. Hist. and Gen. Register of 1892, in which he say s , "My brother George was a
soldier there above a yr., was at the battle of York, or Morst o n Moor, where he did good service,
and was afterwards taken prisoner, but got free and marrie d a 2 nd wife, Miss Ann Borodell, and
with her returned to New Eng. in the yr. 1645, and took up h i s abode again in Roxbury, Mass.,
where he continued to live until 1651, when he came with his f a mily to Conn., and located himself
at New London, Conn., where he resided until 1654, when he ca m e to Stonington with his family
to live, and remained there until his death, which took plac e a t Hartford, Ct., Oct. 24, 1694." Ann
was the dau. of John Borodell and Agnes Wilde.
We learn from the records of Mass. and Conn. that Capt. Geor g e Denison was not only
distinguished as a civilian, but became the most distinguish e d soldier of Conn. in her early
settlement, except Maj. John Mason. His military services ar e o n record in our Colonial archives
where his eminence is recognized and portrayed. Also, you wi l l find his name in the History of
New London and Stonington, where his services are acknowledg e d and described in full.
There is no date of the marriage of Capt. Geo. Denison and A n n Borodell, but they were
doubtless married in England. Pending their courtship an agree m ent was made between them,
which was afterwards ratified and confirmed at Hartford, Ct. , M ay 3, 1662 at follows: "This
witnesseth that I, Geo. Denison, of Southertown, in Conn. Juri s diction in New England, for

and in consideration of a jointure due unto my new wife, Ann B o rodell Denison, upon marriage
and upon my former engagement, in consideration of the sum o f 3 00 lbs. by me received of Mr.
John Borodell, which he freely gave to my wife, his sister, A n n Borodell Denison, and I have had
the use and improvement of and for, and in consideration of co n jugal and dearer affection moving
me, thereunto."
This jointure agreement may be seen on the First Book of Con n . State Records in Hartford,
Conn., page 274. This instrument is proof positive of the marr i age of Capt. George Denison and
wife Ann Borodell, to say nothing of the births of their child r en and his will in his own handwriting
bequeathing to them his entire property.
Geo. Denison was Capt. of New London forces in King Philip's W a r, with Capt. John Mason, Jr.,
under Maj. Robert Treat; in the great swamp fight Dec. 19, 167 5 . He was asst. and deputy from
Stonington to the General Court for fifteen sessions. The To w n of New London granted Capt.
Geo. Denison 200 acres of land in the Pequot-se-pos valley a t M ystic in 1652, upon which he
subsequently built a house, where he and his family made the i r permanent home. He died Oct. 24,
1694, and his widow died Sept. 26, 1712, aged 97, by the grave s tones, which may be found in
the Elm Grove Cemetery at Mystic, Conn. It is thought that A n n was moved from Stonington.
George Denison and his wife, Ann Borodell Denison, were both r e markably handsome and
striking in appearance and at Stonington she was commonly kno w n as "Lady Ann".
He gained great distinction in Indian Wars. Miss Caulkins say s , "Our early history present no
character of bolder and more active spirit than Capt. George D e nison; in emergencies he was
always in demand and he was almost constantly placed in import a nt public positions."
On Oct. 18, 1934 the Daughters of the 17th Century placed a br o nze marker on the grave of
George Denison. This is in the old church yard in the hear t o f the city of Hartford, Conn.
