      THE PACKARD FAMILY.
1 SAMUEL PACKARD, wife and child, came from Windham, near
Hingham, England, in the ship "Diligence," of Ipswich, John
Martin, master. There were 133 passengers. He first settled in
Hingham, Mass., in 1638; from thence he removed to West Bridgewate r .
He was a constable and tavern-keeper. All of this name
who have gone from the Bridgewaters were probably descendants of
his, and, in fact, nearly all of the name in this country can be t r aced
to that place. There have been a variety of ways in which the name
has been written; namely, Pecker, Packer, Peckard, Peckerd; but
the usual and proper name is PACKARD. His children were:--

For those of you interested in the Packard family of Early MA , I a m posting his will indicating those children and grandchildren incl uded w ithin. It should be noted that there is no proof that I am aware o f tha t his wife's maiden name isn, even though many genealogies refe r t o her as Elizabeth Stream.

For additional information on this family, visit www.mayflowerfamil i es.com and use the "search this site" and "search cooke" links. The Pac ka rd Family Association, though having no website, probably has more dat a o n this family than anynt single reference. I believe there are refe r ences sprinkled thoughout this forum on the group. Another reference, t h ough flawed, perhaps, in some details, is Nahum Mitchell's, History o f Br idgewater, MA.

The surname Packard is French. It means the descendant of Bacard (comba t , strong).(Source: New
Dictionary of American Family Names by Elsdon C. Smith. New York: Gramer c y Publishing Company, 1988).
The name Packard appears in English records as early as the beginnin g o f the fourteenth century.
The name was well established in East Anglia long before Samuel's birth.
      Suffolk County, England:
In 1080, Suffolk was a county predominantly of villages and freeman, rat h er than manors and feudal
vassals. Its population was fairly evenly distributed. None of the sev e n principal towns, which
included Ipswich, Bury St. Edmunds, and Dunwich, had over 3000 residents.

Samuel Packard (constable and tavern-keeper) was baptized on September 1 7 , 1612 in Stonham Aspal, a small
village in the Mid-Suffolk region of England. He married Elizabeth 164 3 . Samuel died on November 7, 1684 in
Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Elizabeth died on October 2 7 , 1694 in Bridgewater.

"The status of a yeoman farmer in these times was relatively good if h e w ere successful, and there was enough
social mobility that he could actually aspire to the status of the gent r y for some of his children. Samuel was the
third son. however, and in a land where promogeniture was the practice , h e could expect little in the way of
inheritance" (Packard, Karle S., "Samuel Packard and the English Origi n s of the Packard Family", an excerpt from a Packard's Progress editon).

Samuel Packard with his wife, Elizabeth, and a daughter left Ipswich o n t he Ship Diligent on June 1638. They
arrived in Boston Harbor on August 10, 1638. They immediately went to Hi n gham. They were in Highham in 1652, when his daughter Deliverance was b ap tised. The family then moved to Weymouth where Samuel was a Selectma n fro m 1654 to 1664 and some of his children were born in Weymouth. The n the y settled in Bridgewater,
Massachsuetts about 1664 where he was appointed Constable. Samuel purcha s ed land in Bridgewater before
August 1662. He was Collector of Minister's Rates in 1670, Surveyor of H i ghways in 1672, and Constable again in
1674. In 1671 Samuel was licensed to keep an ordinary (tavern) which h e h ad in 1670. Since Samuel signed with a
mark, this suggests that he could not write. This may be why some earl y r ecords show the name as Packer.

Children of Samuel and Elizabeth Packard were:

      1. Mary Packard was born in England, around 1637. She married Richa r d Phillips about 1656 in Weymouth,
      MA.
      2. Elizabeth Packard was born in Hingham, Massachusetts about 163 9 , and was baptised on July 19, 1646.
Elizabeth married Thomas Alger on November 14, 1665 in Taunton, M A . Thomas was born in England.
      3. Samuel Packard was born in Hingham, MA. about 1641 and was bapti s ed on July 19, 1646. He married
      Elizabeth Lathrop about 1675.

married (1) Clement Briggs about 1667 (2) Thomas Randall about 1671.
      5. Israel Packard was born in Hingham, MA. about 1645 and was bapti z ed on July 19, 1646. There is no
record of his marriage. Israel was a Trooper in 1671. It is believ e d that he died in King Phillip's War.
      6. Jael Packard was born in Hingham, MA about 1647. Jael married ( 1 ) ? Jones about 1665 (2) John Smith
on November 15, 1672 in Tauton, MA.
      7. Deborah Packard was born in Hingham, MA. about 1648. Deborah mar r ied Samuel Washburn about 1676.
      8. Zaccheus Packard was born in Hingham, MA. about 1650 and baptiz e d on April 20, 1651 in Bridgewater,
Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Zaccheus married Sarah Howard abo u t 1678. (Howard is an English name
meaning "descendant of Howard -high warden; ewchard; heart, protect i on-;" a corruption of Hayward. Hayward is also English,
meaning "the manorial official who had charge of the hedges and w a s guardian of the cultivated land to protect it from straying
      cattle").
      9. Jane Packard was born in Hingham, Ma. about 1651 and was baptiz e d on April 20, 1651. Jane died young.

      Phillip's War, and Elizabeth Mitchell.

      THE PACKARD FAMILY

      SAMUEL PACKARD [#354 & #378], d. Bridgewater, MA Nov. 7, 1684, m.ELIZABE T H ____, d. after Oct . 27, 1694. She m(2) John Washburn, bap.Evesham, E ng . Nov. 28, 1621, d. Bridgewater, MA Nov . 12, 1686.

Samuel Packard and his wife Elizabeth, with one child, came from Windham , near Hingham, Norfolk, England. They came on the ship Dilligence of Ips wi ch and landed Aug. 10, 1638. There were 133 passengers aboard and th e sam e year they settled in Hingham, MA. Samuel was among those grante d land i n Hingham in the years from 1635 to 1640.[1] The Packards came t o New Eng land with Reverend Robert Peck's company, which also included t he Stephe n Gates family. Rev. Peck came from the Hingham, Norfolk area o f Englan d and had been convicted as far back as 1615 of teaching the Pur itan scru ples against the requirement to kneel when entering church an d of sayin g it is superstition to bow at the name of Jesus. Peck was sus pended in 1 636, but he continued to hold secret services for select pari shoners. Onl y the threat of summons before the draconian Court of High C ommission i n London drove the elderly minister and his devoted follower s into exil e in 1638. Some fellow villagers had already moved to New Eng land and set tled in 1635 at Bear Cove on the south shore of Massachusett s Bay. That y ear
Bear Cove was renamed Hingham. The NewHingham would prove as independe n t and ornery as Old Hingham. The church retained its presbyterian bia s am ong its congregationalist neighbors and fiercely asserted its loca l right s in the 1645 militia case, creating a constitutional crisis in t he colon y. About 200 people came with the Peck company, depleting Hingha m by abou t a third of its residents.[6]

From Hingham the family removed to Weymouth about 1653, where Samuel w a s a selectman. The family then removed to Bridgewater between 1660 an d 16 63. Samuel served as a constable in Bridgewater in 1664[3/4:61] an d 1674[ 3/5:145] and held an innkeeper's license in 1671.[3/5:54] In Mar c hof 167 1-2 a Samuel Packard (maybe the son) was fined one pound by th e Plymout h Colony Court f or "selling liquor and cyder to theIndians".[3 /5:128] H e was also one of twelve laying out highways in Bridgewater i n 1667 [3/4: 1545] and 1668[3/4:1923]

Samuel had six sons and six daughters. The sons were all soldiers in Ki n g Phillip's War in 167 5 and 1676.[1] It has been stated by some that S am uel probably served as well. However this seems unlikely due to his ad van ced age at the time (71 or so). His will was dated Oct. 29, 1684 an d prob ated March 3, 1684-5, he being then between 70 and 80 years of age . Samue l signed the will as "Samuel Packer".[2] Since then the name ha s mostly t aken the form of Packard. His widow remarried after his deat h to John Was hburn of Bridgewater.

July 1, 1684 a Samuel (possibly son of the immigrant) was on the grandju r y that found Robert Trayes, negro, guilty of shooting Daniel Standlak e o f Scituate in the leg. Standlake's shattered leg had to be amputate d fro m which he subsequently died. Trayes was let off with a fine as th e shoot ing was found to be an accident (or "misadventure" as stated in t herecord s).[3/6:14 12]

Several sources list Samuel's parents as George and Mary (Wither) Packa r d of Colmans, Whitsun Green, Stonham Aspal Parrish, Suffolk, who were m ar ried at Woolpit Parrish March 27, 1600. George was buried at Stonham A spa l Dec. 14, 1623. Mary died at Stowmarket, England in 1652.[5 ] Howeve r n o proof is given to connect Samuel of Norfolk county England and of M assa chusetts with Samuel, the son of George and Mary Packard, who was ba ptise d in Suffolk in 1612. In fact, it is believed that Samuel of Massac husett s was born around 1604, and since baptisms were performed on infan ts, i t would seem highly unlikely the two Samuels were the same man. Fur thermo re , George Packard left a noncupative will which did not mentio n any chi ldren by name. Mary, however, listed the children but did not i nclude Sam uel.[5] Whether the ommission was due to the fact that he ha d already die d or was left out because he had moved to America is not kn own. These sam e sources give this Samuel's wife's name as Elizabeth Stre am, again wit h no proof. She is suppossed to have been born about 1614 a nd
died in Hingham, MA June 17, 1716. Again, it seems improbable that the w o man lived to 102 years of age. If she was his wife, either the death da t e is incorrect or Samuel had two wives named Elizabeth, the later one b ei ng much younger than the first.

Registers. By Bradford Kingman. Published by the

"Samuel Packard, wife and child, came from Windham,
near Hingham, England, in the ship""Diligence," of
Ipswich, John Martin, master. There were 133
passengers. He first settled in Hingham, Mass, in
1638; from thence he removed to West Bridgewater. He
was a constable and tavern-keeper. All of this name who
have gone from the Bridgewaters were probably
descendants of his, and, in fact, nearly
all of the name in this country can be traced to that place.
There have been a variety of ways in which the name has
      been written; namely, Pecker, Packer, Peckard, Peckerd;
      but the usual and proper
      name is Packard."

The above is basically reflected as the same in Mitchell's
History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater, Baltimore
      1970, Gateway Press.
      He emigrated in 1638 from Hingham MA.(103) (2348) (2349)
He died on 11 Jul 1684 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co,
      MA. (2350)

Records show Samuel owned a grant of land in 1638 at
Hingham. He removed with his wife, Elizabeth, about
1660 from Hingham to Bridgewater, Mass. with their
twelve children, Elizabeth, Samuel Jr., Zaccheus, Thomas,
John, Nathaniel, Mary, Hannah, Israel, Jael, Deborah,
      and Deliverance.

That he first lived in Hingham and lastly in Bridgewater is
generally recognized, but most accounts have him moving
directly from the former to the later. However, he moved
from Hingham to Weymouth, where he was a Selectman
from 1654 to 1664 and at least two of his children were
born. He was still in Hingham in 1652 when his daughter,
Deliverance, was baptized, but must have moved soon
      thereafter.

Samuel was not an original proprietor of Bridgewater,
who were all from Duxbury, but he purchased land from
them before August 1662, when he was appointed to a
group to lay out highways. He was an active member of
the town, being Collector of Minister's Rates in 1670,
Surveyor of Highways in 1672, and Constable again in
1674. He was licensed to keep an "ordinary" (tavern) in
1671. He died there 7 November 1684, and his will,
      dated 29 October 1684

In 1667 he served on the committee to lay out streets at
Bridgewater. He was made constable in 1664, and
      licensed to operate a Tavern--Hotel in 1670.

In 1682 he with four sons was named amoung 80
Proprietors of Bridgewater. Bridgewater was taken from
Duxbury and deeded to Miles Standish, Constant
Southworth and Samuel Nash in 1649.

All of Samuel's sons are said to have served as soilders in
the Indian Wars of 1675 and 1676. There is a
discrepancy in the records for Samuel's death date. Some
show it to be 7 April 1684, however his last 'Will' was
dated 29 October 1684. Others list his death date as 7
November 1684. Elizabeth remarried after Samuel's
      death, to John Washburn, 1685/6.
