Robert George Parker
by Alice Gold Hamilton - pieced from the little bit we know...
Robert George Parker was born 14 July 1842 in Caradoc Township, London ( n ow Middlesex County), Ontario, Canada to Solomon Parker and Nancy Welc h . His parents were both from the same area there in Ontario. He was six t h of a family of nine children, his oldest sister being almost 15 whe n h e was born. When he was 7 and 1/2 years old his mother died shortly a fte r the birth of his brother Thomas, on 15 Dec 1850.
Sometime after Robert George's mother died, his father, Solomon, and t h e four youngest children, Robert George, Providence Jane, Lydia Ann, a n d Thomas came out west. The oldest children, Amy, William and Margaret , e ventaully raised families in Michigan. Where James and John Parker en de d up, I do not know. By 1850 James was almost 15 and John almost 13. T he y may have stayed in the area they were born or may have come west wit h t heir father.
Since Solomon was not baptized until after he died in 1884 (baptized i n 1 889), and Robert George wasn't baptized until he was 21 years old (i n 186 3), I going to assume that Robert George is the first convert to th e Chur ch in the Parker line. He married Harriet Ann Slack three years af ter hi s baptism on 29 Nov 1866 in Salt Lake City. According to the recor d I hav e, he had been married previously to a Nancy Roberts, whether sh e died o r they were separated, I have no clue.
He and Harriet Ann Slack had eight children (Sophrona, James Slack, Geor g e Francis, Harry Jones, Mary, Walter Jones, William Andrew, and Amy). F o r a livelihood he drove the mule team street cars in Salt Lake City an d a fter a while he turned primarily to running mule team freight wagon s an d was away from his family quite often. They were in the Salt Lake a rea u ntil about 1877, when they moved to Heber City. Grandma Parker (Mal inda H elen Watson Parker) says that as a family they were very poor, Jam es Slac k, for example, could have only one pair of shoes a year - when t hey wor e out he went barefoot. Robert George and Harriet lost many of th eir chil dren while they were young. George Francis, born in Cedar Fort ( west ove r the hill from Lehi) in 1870, died in 1875. Harry Jones, born i n Salt La ke in 1872, died in 1888. Mary died at the age of 4 years in 18 79. Walte r Jones, born in 1877 in Heber City, died in 1883, at the age o f 5. Willi am died at the age of 18 while serving in the Spanish America n war in 189 8. Little Amy died the day she was born in Brigham City in 1 882. Harrie t died the same day (9 Nov 1882) that Amy did and both were b uried in th e same casket when they were buried in the Brigham City Cemet ery two day s later. Of all of Robert George and Harriet's children, onl y two, Sophro na and James Slack Parker, married.
After Harriet died, James Slack joined Robert George on the mule team fr e ighting between Butte, Montana and Ogden and/or Salt Lake. Robert Geor g e did marry again - a woman by the name of Mary Walker. They settled ( i f Robert George could ever hold still) in Chesterfield, Bannock, Idaho . T his was where Grandpa Parker (James Slack Parker) eventually learne d hi s skills as a cattleman and eventually married his first wife, Ruthe nia D avids, before going to Mountain View, Alberta, Canada.
Robert George Parker died the 18th of February 1894 in Idaho and is buri e d in the tiny cemetery in Chesterfield, Idaho next to Mary Walker. In t h e summer of 1990, Gene and I visited the small cemetery and were abl e t o find him and Mary quickly - in the first row along the east fence.
Robert George Parker seems to have had quite the life, full of travel a n d new places, and full of sorrow as well. He and Harriet raised their s on , James Slack Parker, to be a hard worker and a leader and a man who l ove d the Lord and loved to serve others. Though we don't know much abou t Rob ert George Parker, I can't imagine that his son, James Slack Parker , wasn 't just like his father.
