WEST, Willis, private, N.C. Militia
The West Family History simply states "a Willis West is listed in
Revolutionary War records as a Private in a North Carolina unit."
Willis was born in Bladen county, N.C. His father was James West
of that County. Soldier is supposed to have enlisted from Bladen
County. By 1783 Willis, James and William West were on the tax
list of Duplin County and the next year they were listed as being in
Sampson County, N.C. Willis was married twice and had ten children
by each wife. About 1830 he and his second wife, Silvey Harmon,
removed to Fayette county, Ga. There she applied for a pension at
age 96. In her statement she declared that the soldier had lived in
Bladen County when he entered service, that she and the soldier had
married about Oct 1799 in Sampson county, that the soldier had died
in Fayette County, Ga., on 23 Nov 1837. Willis married Sarah Gainey
as a first wife. she died in early 1799, and their ten children were:
1- Edna born about 1783.
2- Noel E. born 1784 who married lst Winiford Johnson and
2nd Dorcas Jackson.
3- Nancy born about 1785 who married Allen Beavers.
4- Willis Jr born 1787 who married lst Elonare and 2nd Rebecca_____
5- Sally.
6- Handy who married Martha Dudley.
7- A daughter who died in 1805.
8- Collin.
9- Allen who went to Georgia and gave an affidavit for his step-mother
in April 1860. And
10- Loyd (1799-1881) who married Edney Autry.
By his 2nd wife Willis had the following ten children:
11- Britton. 12- James. 13- Isams. 14- Wynham. 15- Joseph. 16- Mary
Ann. 17-Annie Jane. 18- Spicey. 19- Polley. And 20- Ursula who married
a Mr. Stacks and removed to Arkansas.
Silvey was living with Ursula in Arkansas after 1860 when she died.
